Versace comes to Paris: the fashion event of the summer
Forty years in the making, Musée Maillol opens its doors to Gianni Versace for the first major retrospective dedicated to the designer in France, running in the 7th arrondissement. A landmark exhibition for anyone who follows fashion closely, or simply loves being surprised by an extraordinary wardrobe.
The exhibition in brief
Around 450 pieces trace the Italian couturier's world: iconic gowns, accessories, preparatory sketches, archive footage. Several creations are being shown to the public for the very first time. The staging, by Nathalie Crinière, embraces a bold, graphic pop aesthetic true to the designer's spirit.
The exhibition follows Versace's journey from Calabria to the international catwalks: Greek statuary, Catholic imagery, a love of the baroque, prints that became icons in their own right, the influences that shaped a signature style like no other.
Why now
Following successful runs in London, Berlin and Málaga, Paris now welcomes the retrospective, thirty years after the designer's death and what would have been his 80th birthday. A fitting tribute, staged in the world capital of fashion.
From Hôtel Moderniste, straight to the museum
Good news for guests staying at the Moderniste: Metro line 12 runs directly to the museum, no changes required. From Convention station, just steps from the hotel, it's roughly a 20-minute ride towards Front Populaire to Rue du Bac. From there, Musée Maillol is a one-minute walk away, at 61 rue de Grenelle.
For a quieter visit, the Wednesday late opening, until 10pm, is the best time to go.
