It’s official: The long-awaited reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will take place on December 7 and 8, 2024.
This symbolic date marks the return of this heritage treasure, five years after the devastating fire of April 2019. Despite the scale and complexity of the restoration work, this iconic monument will once again welcome worshippers and visitors from around the world by the end of the year, honoring its cultural and spiritual legacy.
An ambitious restoration
Since 2019, authorities, including President Emmanuel Macron and the Minister of Culture, had affirmed their commitment to reopening Notre-Dame in 2024. Although some work will continue, essential parts of the structure, such as the restored spire and the famous rooster at its peak, are ready. This monumental project involved a multitude of skilled artisans who restored the wooden frame and secured the entire structure. Additional work on the plaza and surrounding access points will continue beyond December 2024 to enhance the visitor experience.
Reopening celebration program
The reopening festivities promise moments of deep intensity and reflection. The program notably includes:
- December 7, 2024: Inauguration ceremony and activation of the restored organ, with a Magnificat or Te Deum followed by vespers to celebrate the cathedral's rebirth.
- December 8, 2024: Inaugural mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, including consecration of the altar, symbolizing the return of spiritual life to this sacred space.
To extend the celebrations, the Archbishop of Paris, Monseigneur Laurent Ulrich, has announced an octave of ceremonies through December 15, 2024, inviting the community to partake in this solemn period.
Cultural events and enriched visits
In parallel, the reopening of Notre-Dame will also be an opportunity to offer various cultural events under the theme “Notre-Dame de Paris: Toward the Reopening.” Among these, the Cluny Museum will present a special exhibition of sculptures from the cathedral, available from November 18, 2024, through March 16, 2025. The Maison du Chantier et des Métiers, located under the plaza, will also welcome visitors to explore the artisanal skills that made the restoration of this monument possible.
Concerts and musical performances are also planned, featuring the Notre-Dame Choir and additional ensembles. Be sure not to miss the exceptional concerts at the Collège des Bernardins on December 9, 10, and 11, 2024.
Access arrangements for the reopening
To manage the influx of visitors, a free online reservation system will be available starting mid-November 2024 on the cathedral's official website. This ticketing system will help regulate access to ensure an orderly and safe visit. A mobile app will also provide information and an interactive guide to enrich the visitor experience.
Notre-Dame de Paris: A symbol of resilience and heritage
The reopening of Notre-Dame is not only the return of a major Paris landmark but also a powerful message of resilience and hope. Overcoming technical challenges to achieve its restoration, this rebirth reflects universal devotion to this exceptional monument. It embodies the commitment to preserve and pass on this architectural and spiritual treasure to future generations.
