The Art Deco Facade of the Hotel Moderniste: An Elegant Historical Relic

As you may know, the Hotel Moderniste was opened in November 2021 after two long years of renovations. Today, we want to highlight the building we selected for the creation of the Hotel Moderniste, dedicating a significant portion of our efforts to showcase its magnificent façade.

Located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, one of the largest in the city, this building stands out amidst a mosaic of neighborhoods, ranging from the banks of the Seine to the outskirts of the 7th arrondissement.

It is a true architectural masterpiece and a beautiful example of Art Deco, elegantly combining concrete and brick in harmonious proportions. This edifice spans seven floors, prominently featuring the characteristic porthole windows of the era, reminiscent of the daring choices made for ocean liners, so emblematic of the early 20th century.

The history of our neighborhood has seen complex transformations, transitioning from humble districts to more affluent areas over the decades. One of the key strengths of Art Deco is that it transcends notions of wealth and prestige, prioritizing aesthetics and innovation above all.

The burgeoning shipyards greatly influenced architects of the time, giving rise to the "ocean liner" style. This style is characterized by elongated white structures, often situated in prominent angles, with understated facades that emphasize bow windows and porthole windows borrowed from ships, as well as rooftop terraces that you can enjoy in some of our rooms on the seventh floor.

Art Deco, as an artistic movement, thrived between the 1920s and 1939, notably marked by the 1925 International Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris. However, its origins trace back to the 1910s when it emerged as a reaction to the perceived excesses of Art Nouveau.

Art Deco retained ornamentation as a significant feature, including elements such as wrought ironwork, floral motifs, bas-reliefs, and statuary. Gradually, it evolved towards cleaner, geometric forms, making way for curves. It is this latter evolution that inspired us in the creation of the interior decoration of the Hotel Moderniste.

The influence of Art Deco extended to all visual and artisanal arts. Villas, houses, and hotels were designed in the Art Deco style down to the finest detail, from furniture to glasswork, doors, and doorknobs, contributing to the creation of a cohesive and streamlined work of art.

The Hotel Moderniste pays homage to the spirit of Art Deco, combining elegance and architectural innovation, as well as geometry and clean lines, which we have reinterpreted in a more modern style inside the hotel. The façade, with its porthole windows and subtle interplay of concrete and brick, bears testament to the significance of this artistic movement in the history of Parisian architecture. It stands as a remarkable example of how Art Deco has left an indelible mark on the architectural heritage of the City of Light.
